Meet Our Founder: Dr. Margaret Adjei, PharmD

INKUH is a Black-owned, Texas-based skincare and haircare company founded by pharmacist Dr. Margaret Adjei. INKUH was first envisioned in 2010 and formally established in 2020. Dr. Adjei personally formulates INKUH’s products, bringing her pharmacy background and respect for traditional ingredients to everyday skin and hair care. Each INKUH product has its own formula. 

But the inspiration for INKUH was deeply personal.

A Mother’s Experience. A Pharmacist’s Perspective.

Dr. Adjei’s daughter was born prematurely at just 27 weeks. During her daughter’s time in neonatal intensive care, concerns about her delicate, dry skin stayed with her mother long after those early days.

That experience helped shape a question that would eventually inspire INKUH: how could everyday care feel more thoughtful, personal and informed?

Her conversations with patients about dryness and skin discomfort reinforced that interest. INKUH grew from the meeting of those experiences—motherhood, pharmacy and a desire to help people make more informed choices about the products they use.

The Pharmacist Behind the Formulas

Dr. Adjei earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from St. John’s University in Queens, New York. Her professional experience spans community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy and informatics.

She serves on the Texas Department of State Health Services HIV Medication Advisory Committee and is listed among UT Health San Antonio’s HIV/HCV ECHO team members. These roles reflect her commitment to patient care and professional education; they do not constitute institutional endorsement of INKUH.

At INKUH, she develops the formulas and selects the oils, butters and botanical ingredients used across the collection. Different products serve different purposes—from cleansing to moisturizing and conditioning—and customers are encouraged to review each product’s ingredients and directions.

Rooted in Ghana. Built in Texas.

Shea butter is central to INKUH’s story. The company sources shea butter from women in Sandema, Northern Ghana, where preparation methods have been passed down through generations.

For Dr. Adjei, that connection brings together traditional knowledge, women’s enterprise and the everyday routines of INKUH customers.

INKUH’s logo features Mako, an Adinkra symbol associated with the idea that peppers do not all ripen at the same time. For us, it represents growth, opportunity and the importance of supporting one another through different stages of life.
